      Why did Egypt order frigates?

Egypt has about 2900 km of coastline. Need to assert control of it, and watch for smugglers and the sort.

Not a large number of new armaments. Is this part of larger procurement for the Egyptian armed forces?

I believe this is just the start. The US has never allowed Egypt to purchase or operate top tier twin engine fighters, as it might pose a credible threat to some others in the region. Egypt has only had access to 2nd tier F-16's as it's main fighter.
With this purchase, Egypt can now develop new tactics and air combat strategies, opening up a whole new realm. With that, Egypt can then determine what's it's further requirements may be.

Egypt is currently preoccupied with Libyan and Sinai Islamists, but it wouldn't need top tier jets to deal with them. Acquisition of Rafales suggests Cairo hasn't forgotten its old enemy to the east.

That makes sense, starman. 24 Rafales doesn't seem like a lot for a country the size of Egypt. It should purchase more, as well as other categories of more modern, military aircraft.

I think Egypt would've ordered much more long ago if only it could afford too. Recent help from the Saudis may have made this possible. But they should underwrite the purchase of 200 or more top of the line jets.

That's a more effective number of jets, starman. It's a shame to see Egypt in its current state. It needs to modernise more than just its fighter aircraft inventory.

What do you make of the claim that Egypt bought the jets because of an "unstable Libya" and the threat of ISIS? Sounds absurd. Egypt had more than enough already to deal with Libya and it's not even involved in the fight against ISIS. The Rafales are meant to help counter Israeli air power.

Of course. The big question is, will they get the advanced missiles and other armaments they need to truly take advantage of the aircraft's capabilities.

What if they do get advanced missiles and other armaments? How well would the Rafales fare against F-15s, F-16s and F-35s?
